Beautiful Yosemite is a Great Place for Traveling with Pets

Yosemite National Park in California is full of truly majestic scenery. Located in Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera counties in east central California, the park covers an area of 761,268 acres and encompasses the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains.  While over 3.7 people visit Yosemite National Park each year, most spend their time in the seven square miles known as the Yosemite Valley.  The granite cliffs, spectacular waterfalls and Giant Sequoias are some of the majesty that Yosemite is known for. It is a great destination for a family trip and is even fairly dog friendly!

Traveling with pets to Yosemite is a great choice. Dogs are allowed in Yosemite National Park, but to ensure that pets and the natural wildlife that resides within the park are protected from each other, the Park enforces several important regulations regarding dogs at Yosemite.  First of all, most of the 13 campgrounds at Yosemite are dog friendly, check with current park regulations when booking a spot. Currently dogs are not allowed in the following campgrounds: Tamarack Flat, Porcupine Flat, group camps and walk-in campgrounds such as Camp 4. Dogs are allowed on fully paved trails and roads on a leash no longer than six feet. Dogs cannot be left unattended, for their own safety. There is plenty of wildlife that could be predatory towards your dog, so take this regulation seriously.  Dogs are not allowed on unpaved roads except for the Meadow Loop and Four Mile Fire roads in Wawona, on the Carlson Road, and on the Old Big Oak Flat Road between Hodgdon Meadow and Hazel Green Creek. Pet owners are responsible for monitoring and managing the behavior of their dog to ensure that Rover doesn’t cause any damage to the park, pollute the clear steams and water sources in the park or endanger or injury any wildlife. Additionally, park regulations state that you must clean up after your dog. For pet-friendly lodgings outside of the park, look no further than the pawmazing database of Yosemite area hotels. Be sure to search for lodgings in Yosemite National Park, CA on the Vacation Pet Friendly website for the full listing of pet-friendly lodgings. Additionally, the Yosemite Valley Stable is a boarding kennel at the Yosemite Valley that is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. If you wish to use this kennel, plan ahead and provide written proof of immunizations.
