A Southern California Favorite–Traveling with Pets to Santa Monica

There are so many things to do with pets in Santa Monica you will stay entertained your entire vacation! Santa Monica, California is paradise for the hip crowd. Santa Monica often is the prime location for many movies. When most people think of Southern California, the mental image they get is Santa Monica. With miles of wide white sand beaches and tons of funky shops and restaurants and bars, SaMo, as the locals call it, is an ideal place to vacation with your dog. Santa Monica and its neighbor, Venice Beach, are some of the most dog friendly parts of the notoriously dog friendly city of Los Angeles. If you’re thinking about taking a beach trip, you can’t beat traveling with pets to Santa Monica. Check out our Santa Monica Travel Guide for all the fun things there is to do.

From the Third Street Promenade to Main Street, Santa Monica is a great walking neighborhood. With plenty of residents out strolling with their pups, you’ll notice just how carefree and chill the local establishments are about allowing dogs into stores and onto the patios of restaurants. In fact, just last weekend I was having brunch on Santa Monica’s Main Street, and watched the hostess seat a couple and their Rhodesian Ridgeback inside the restaurant. As I understand this is a bit of a local secret, I will not divulge where. However, I am betting this happens at more than just one place.

The Boardwalk at the beach is a great place for hanging with your hound as well. Keep in mind that the main part of the boardwalk in Venice Beach is closed to dogs during peak season. Dogs must be on leash at all times and from Memorial Day to Labor Day dogs are prohibited on the Venice “Rose Beach” Boardwalk from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. Anything north of Rose Avenue is not part of this doggie restriction rule.  Stroll a little farther north to the Casa Del Mar and Shutters part of the beach and you’ll see a grassy area between the hotels and the sand. This is a great place to spread a blanket out and have a picnic with your dog hanging out right at your side.  The boardwalk goes north for many miles through Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades, making for a lovely afternoon walk. Time it so you are on your way back as the sun is setting and feast your eyes on the gorgeous sunsets Santa Monica is known for.

As far as dog parks go, there are four in Santa Monica proper with two in the touristy zone. Joslyn Dog Park at  633 Kensington Road is a small fenced area for licensed dogs to run and frolic off leash. Pacific Street Dog Park is located at Main and Pacific streets and features an off-leash area with shaded seats for people as well as human and dog water fountains. The park is open 7:30am-8:30pm on weekdays and 8:30am-8:30pm on weekends.

When it comes to lodgings for you and your dog, Santa Monica is pawsitively doggone pawmazing!  Vacation Pet Friendly has a full listing of the hotels and motels that will happily welcome you, your family, and go bonkers for Fido, so be sure to check that out. Be prepared though – Santa Monica has gone to the dogs! People traveling with their pups are not relegated to flea bag motels (pun intended!) miles from the beach. From Lowes’ Santa Monica Beach to the Fairmont Miramar, to the Georgian Hotel and more, you can stay in style mere steps from the ocean with your dog in Santa Monica, California. To make life simple for those traveling with pets to Santa Monica, you can make reservations at nearly any pet friendly hotel including the major hotel chains, from Vacation Pet Friendly – the travel website designed specifically for pet owners.
