Orlando is the Happiest Place on Earth for people and their dogs!
Orlando, Florida is synonymous with family fun in the form of world class amusement parks, great weather, amazing parks and restaurants. However, I bet you didn’t know that Orlando is also a city that has many dog friendly hotels, restaurants, parks, lakes, festivals and Disney sponsored doggie day care. That’s right, while you’re enjoying Mickey, Shamu, Harry Potter, or a little movie magic at Universal Orlando, your precious pup can be frolicking with new friends at WDW’s Best Friend’s Resort or Dog Day Afternoon. Find everything that’s pet friendly in our Orlando Travel Guide – exclusively for pet owners.
Canine Tourism in Orlando is on the Rise!
But let’s back up a bit first. Orlando is a city that attracts millions of tourists from all over the world every year. Many of those tourists are of the canine variety and the city is well prepared to handle them. Many hotels, including several Disney properties, accept dogs as guests. The Sheraton Safari at Lake Buena Vista accepts dogs up to 80lbs. The Sheraton doesn’t charge an additional fee for your dog, but they cannot be left alone in the room. One option is the concierge, who can arrange responsible pet sitting for a fee.
To Be or Not to Be?
Other hotels take Tipper as well, such as Universal’s Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, both of which take up to two dogs of any size for $25 each. Still, you don’t want to leave Spot in your hotel room while you ride Space Mountain and visit Hogwart’s School of Wizardry and Witchcraft. Walt Disney World’s Best Friends Pet Resort is a great option for travelers. My friend Kristen wrote about it recently for Walt Disney World for Grownups. Another option is to take your hound to Dog Day Afternoon, a doggie day care facility that provides cage free supervised fun for your dog. Be sure to check with the dog facility before arrival about vaccinations, bordetella and other requirements.
Fun Stuff -Ruff
Orlando is so dog friendly, they even have a Doggie Derby. That’s right, on the morning of the Kentucky Derby, an annual charity event is held in Baldwin Park. All the profits from the event are donated to canine related charities. And while you’re at Baldwin Park, be sure to check out the dog friendly lake. When you’re done, your family and your beloved dog can have lunch at a number of dog friendly restaurants in Orlando like Bravissimo Italian Café and Dexter’s. Orlando is paws-itively a dog friendly vacation destination.
